Our health improvement programs help patients, families, and community members manage their risk for heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
Health screening, exercise programs, education sessions and support groups are available on a variety of topics.
Cardiac education and support
Unity's Health Improvement Center offers classes and support groups for people living with or wanting to prevent heart disease. For more information, call the Health Improvement Center 763-236-3535.
- Low Sodium Strategies defines levels of salt restriction, explains goals and rationale, discusses label reading and eating out at restaurants. This class is appropriate for patients with hypertension and/or heart failure.
- Healthy Heart Nutrition defines low cholesterol and low saturated fat diet, shopping tips, heart healthy recipes and eating out in restaurants. This is appropriate for patients who are overweight and have high cholesterol. This class is taught by a registered dietitian.
- Risk Factor Identification and Evaluation concentrates on the individual's risk factors and evaluates his/her progress in changing them.
- Benefits of Exercise includes a detailed discussion on the benefits of exercise. Learn the proper models and methods of exercise and how to gauge the proper intensity of exercise for you.
- Stress Identification and Modification helps you identify your personal stressors and recognize your body's response to stress. Relaxation techniques are also discussed.
- The Cardiac Club support group members meet regularly to encourage each another in living well with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease. Meetings are open to the public and include presentations about topics of interest.
- The American Heart Association's CPR - Friends and Family class is offered throughout the year, taught by Health Improvement Center staff.

Lung Power: Pulmonary rehabilitation program and support groups
Respiratory services offers Lung Power, an education and exercise program for chronic lung disease patients and their families. The program teaches you about your illness and how to manage your condition. It helps you improve your stamina and potential for a more active life.
A physician referral is required to enroll in Lung Power. Ask your doctor for more information, or call Allina Class Registration at 612-262-3333.

Tobacco intervention program
The tobacco intervention program offers an inpatient and outpatient component. If you are at Unity Hospital for medical reasons and are a smoker, you are given the opportunity to speak with a tobacco cessation counselor. The counselor will assist you in developing a plan to quit tobacco products usage and follow up with you after discharge.
