Pharmacy Practice Management I and II*
Overview
The purpose of the Pharmacy Practice Management rotation is to enhance the resident’s
understanding of the health system organization and the role of pharmacy in
meeting the goals of the organization. The resident will gain knowledge and
skills in leadership in the management of the medication use process, clinical programs, personnel
and financial operations.
The resident will be involved in administrative activities and projects throughout
the course of the month. The resident will be expected to develop and use independent
problem-solving skills related to assessing the impact of pharmacy services
on the medication use process and developing and implementing recommendations
for improvement.

Goal P9: Participate in the medication-use evaluation (MUE) program in a health system.

Goal P12: Understand a process for formulating and delivering programs that center on disease prevention and wellness promotion.

Daily rotation activities
1. Develop project goals for rotation and meeting schedule.
2. Meet several times a week to discuss objectives, background of meetings and progress on rotation project.
3. Participate in the recruitment & hiring process, when appropriate.
4. Participate in the planning, development, assessment and/or performance improvement of pharmacy services.
5. Participate in the development or modification of a policy related to drug use & control, including evaluation systems to assess ongoing compliance
with those policies.
6. Identify managerial skills necessary to effectively function in a leadership position.
7. Identify core library regarding legal & regulatory requirements that must be met & documentation pertaining to such requirements.
8. Participate in the preparation, or assessment of capital, personnel, operating
and revenue budgets. Identify opportunities for reduction in drug expenditures
and/or improvement in finances through drug resource management or pharmacy
service development.
9. Enhance written and verbal communication skills through the preparation of
agendas, memos, meeting minutes, reports and presentations.
10. Manage time effectively.
11. Other activities as assigned by preceptor.
Interaction with healthcare providers
The resident will work routinely with the Director of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy
Managers. Often meetings will involve leaders from senior management and other
healthcare professions.
Meeting attendance
The resident will set up a meeting weekly with the preceptor for 30 minutes.
These meetings will allow time for the preceptor to review rotation activities
from the previous week and provide feedback on performance. The resident will
also set up a meeting on the last day of the rotation to review the preceptor
and resident evaluation. The resident will attend staff meetings at the rotation
site. Additional meetings include meetings that the director attends during
the rotation (e.g. Allina Leadership, Patient Care Leadership, Medical Staff Quality,
Pharmacy Manager, Pharmacy Staff, Metro Pharmacy Director,
Nursing Pharmacy, Allina Pharmacy Operations, Medication Safety Steering).

Orientation to the rotation - the preceptor will:
- Provide the resident the goals and objectives for the learning experience
- List the activities the resident will be engaged in during the month to
accomplish the goals and objectives (see step 7 of the RLS process)
- Describe how the preceptor will evaluate the resident (e.g., objective data,
criteria based checklist)
- Provide the resident with self evaluation forms (e.g., rotation evaluation
from, criteria based checklist), and
- Communicate how will the resident evaluate the preceptor
- Establish routine meetings during the month to provide feedback and allow
time for clarifying expectations. Monitor the growth and development of the
resident during this time.
* This rotation can be selected as one or two months. The second month provides
additional mastery of the general topics as well as additional knowledge and
skills in practice management
